Overview

The Samurai Game® is a highly challenging and psychologically intense simulation where participants assume the roles of medieval samurai. By stepping into an unfamiliar realm of relationships and governance, participants gain sharp insights into their habitual behavioral patterns. The Game serves as a mirror, reflecting how they navigate their personal and professional lives.

Created by George Leonard, the Game emphasizes personal commitment and integrity with minimal props. It simulates the intensity and immediacy often associated with combat, mirroring real-life challenges. Participants may encounter situations reminiscent of past struggles, testing their integrity, resilience, and adaptability in unpredictable circumstances.

The Game fosters powerful, life-changing insights, encouraging participants to confront their limitations and embrace new perspectives.

About George Leonard

George Leonard (1923–2010) was a WWII pilot, author (Mastery), and a key figure in the Human Potential Movement. A fifth-degree Aikido black belt, he co-founded Aikido of Tamalpais and created The Samurai Game® in 1977. His work blended martial arts, mindfulness, and conflict resolution, leaving a legacy of transformative training programs that inspire resilience and personal growth worldwide.

Purpose of The Samurai Game®

The Samurai Game® aims to help participants:

  • Gain clarity about their habitual reactions to challenges, enabling greater choice and impact in their lives.
  • Experience intense yet safe competition, demanding honor, dignity, and integrity.
  • Demonstrate integrity, teamwork, and commitment in uncertain and rule-free scenarios.
  • Appreciate the vividness and value of life.
  • Confront internal resistance and discomfort.
  • Explore the interplay of thoughts, emotions, and physical responses.

Game Experience

Participants enter a simulated medieval samurai world, forming two competing armies. Through symbolic battles, they exercise resourcefulness, decisiveness, and teamwork. The fast-paced, unpredictable nature of the Game ensures no two experiences are alike. While requiring no physical contact, the Game demands mental focus, courage, and a “warrior” spirit.

Participants

The Game is designed for:

  • Individuals seeking self-awareness, leadership development, and personal growth.
  • Teams aiming to enhance collaboration, leadership, and organizational alignment.
  • Universities and leadership programs fostering experiential learning.

Note:

The presence of senior leaders is managed to ensure all participants engage freely. The Game is not an assessment tool—using it as such undermines its intent and inhibits learning.
